“You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you”.
Through his baptism by John the Baptist at the waters of the Jordan, Jesus had a deep experience of being loved and blessed by the father. He heard the words “you are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you”. He was now given his mission to proclaim the Kingdom of God.
Through our baptism, we have all become God’s beloved sons and daughters. God’s favour rests on us and God invites us to walk in the path of life. As we hear in today’s first reading: “Come to the water all you who are thirsty. Come to me: listen and your soul shall live”.
As sisters and brothers of Jesus Christ, we are all called to make his kingdom real on earth here and now by continuing to share God’s life and love with one another.

A Prayer for the New Year
God of this new year, we are walking into mystery. We face the future, not knowing what the days and months will bring to us or how we will respond. Be with us as we journey. Deepen our faith to see all of life through your eyes. Fill us with hope and an abiding trust that you dwell in us amidst all our joys and sorrows. Thank you for the treasure of our faith. Thank you for the gift of being able to rise each day knowing that you are walking through the day with us.
God of this new year, we praise you. Amen.

Amen.

“I am the handmaid of the Lord”
When Mary said ‘yes’ to the Incarnation,
she said yes to God and promised
that she would centre her life
on God’s invitation to be the mother of his Son.
She said ‘yes’ to new life,
she said ‘yes’ to faith that God would look after her,
she said ‘yes’ to trust that God would not let her down,
she said ‘yes’ to hope that her son would find his way in life;
and isn’t all this like any mother or father,
as they await new life?
She did not expect easy answers.
She would be patient with life
and with God.
If we say ‘yes’ with thanks and with trust,
If we say ‘yes’ to God’s grace in our lives,
We will never be alone.

O’God, I proclaim the mystery of my faith
that spring will follow winter,
that life will follow death
and that one day
all the tombs of death’s season
will be transformed into the green of spring.
May my trust in the coming of spring
on this winter day
be a sign of my faith
in the resurrection of all life,
the fulfilment of your promise
that we all will share
in the new life and eternal spring
of your son, Jesus Christ.

O’God, I proclaim the mystery of my faith
that spring will follow winter,
that life will follow death
and that one day
all the tombs of death’s season
will be transformed into the green of spring.
May my trust in the coming of spring
on this winter day
be a sign of my faith
in the resurrection of all life,
the fulfilment of your promise
that we all will share
in the new life and eternal spring
of your son, Jesus Christ.

“Well done, good and faithful servant”
We are all gifted by God in such a variety of ways, but we have one thing in common—we are all gifted! God gives talents to all—so we are talented! Regardless of what those gifts or talents are, they are entrusted to us not only to offer us life, but also to make a difference to the lives of others, so that they might see the goodness of God at work in our world. Even to risk using our gifts and talents in the smallest of ways can make a massive difference in the life of the world. God takes a risk with us, the faithful God who offers us so much, the question is are we willing to trust and to take the risk with God?
Rev. Peter O’Kane.
