“Why be envious because I am generous”?

Today’s Gospel goes far beyond our human sense of justice. The owner of the vineyard pays all his workers the same despite having worked different hours. This seem so unjust to our narrow way of looking at things.
But in the parable, Jesus is giving us a picture of the generosity of God. God’s goodness and love goes beyond human justice. It has no limits.

Our only response to God’s generosity is humble thanksgiving. There is no point in trying to compare ourselves to one another. Instead, we are invited to acknowledge that all we are and have is a gift from God who is boundless in mercy, goodness and love.

PARISH VOLUNTEER CELEBRATION
A huge amount of work for Tullow parish is done throughout the year by many different voluntary helpers. This work is linked to helping and caring for people, young and old, celebrating various liturgies, ensuring the maintenance of parish property and many other activities associated with parish life.

“The Son of Man must be lifted up so that
everyone who believes may have eternal life in him”.

Today’s feast—The Triumph of the Cross—reminds us why we come to venerate the Cross on Good Friday. Just as Jesus carried his cross to Calvary, so Jesus is with us in the crosses we have to carry. He walks with us in love and ultimately, his love is stronger than death.

So the cross is no longer a symbol of defeat, but a powerful reminder to us of our victory in the risen Christ and the promise of eternal life to all of us.

“God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life”.

A REFLECTION FOR THE BEGINNING
OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR.
The kingdom of God always lies beyond us. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work.
We plant seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted knowing they hold future promise.
We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realising that.
This enables us to do something and to do it very well.
It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest.
Oscar Romero.

Tullow Parish Newsletter 17 August 2008

TULLOW, GRANGE
& ARDATTIN
PARISH NEWSLETTER
17th August, 2008. Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

“Woman, you have great faith”
In his good-humoured exchange with the Canaanite woman, in today’s Gospel, Jesus is teaching the
people around him a valuable lesson. He knows they might be inclined to think that salvation is not meant for outsiders so he begins by giving the
expected answer: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel!”
But then, by her convincing argument, he lets the woman show the depth of her faith. By granting her wish, Jesus shows that the gift of God’s love and healing is for everybody. No one is excluded. What is asked of us is that we believe in the power and presence of God in our midst.
“ O God, be gracious and bless us
And let your face shed its light upon us.”

“They all ate as much as they wanted”.
The crowds who followed Jesus in today’s Gospel were nourished in body and soul. We too are nourished each time we gather around the Lord’s table.
We are nourished by His Word: - “Pay attention, come to me; listen, and your soul shall live” (1st reading).
We are nourished by His love:- “Nothing can come between us and the love of Christ” (2nd reading).
We are nourished by the gift of His body and blood: “you open wide your hand, grant the desires of all who live” (Resp. Psalm).
As we return to our homes and community, we pray that as we have been nourished, we can be bread for each other:-
The Bread of hope.
The Bread of love.
The Bread of life.

RISKS

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out for another is to risk involvement
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas your dreams, before a crowd is to
risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing and is nothing. They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, change, grow, love or live. Chained by their attitude they are slaves, they have forfeited their freedom. Only a person who risks is free.
