“Accept and submit to the word that has been planted in you and can save your souls”.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges the Pharisees and Scribes who are concerned only with external rules and regulations. They forget what is really important. It’s what’s in our hearts and what flows from our hearts that matters. There in the depths of our heart, God’s word and God’s love has been planted, and it’s from that wellspring of love that the Lord invites us to live out our daily lives. As we return to the routine of a new school year, help us, Lord to listen to your word of love in our hearts and so journey together as a community of love and compassion.

23rd August 2009. Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time

“ WHAT ABOUT YOU?”

Some of the disciples of Jesus found his teaching on the Eucharist impossible to take and they left him. Jesus was sad to see them go, but he let them go because he could not water down his teaching. Peter and the other eleven disciples remained faithful to Jesus.
If we also believe this teaching of Jesus, we will make the sensible, wise choice and commit ourselves to following him. That’s the wisest, most important choice we will make in the whole of our life.
We must say, with the people in the First Reading:
“We have no intention of deserting the Lord our God … who worked those great wonders before our eyes and preserved us all along the way.”

16th August, 2009. Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

As many young people set out on new paths in the coming weeks,
perhaps the words of this song may express our wishes and prayers:

FOREVER YOUNG
May God bless and keep you always,
may your wishes all come true,
may you always do for others
and let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
and climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,

May you grow up to be righteous,
may you grow up to be true,
may you always know the truth
and see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young.
(Bob Dylan)

“I am the living bread which has come down from heaven”

We hunger for lots of things.
We hunger for food to give us sustenance and energy.
We hunger for relationships to help us through life.
We hunger for faith to give deeper meaning to our lives.
We hunger for hope especially in the midst of a recession.
We hunger for love to bring out the best part of each of us.
And we hunger for God to bring meaning and fulfilment to all we do.

We pray to you, God to satisfy all our hungers, but especially our hunger for meaning and fulfilment in life.
We invite you, our loving God, into our lives.
We ask you to bring many blessings into our lives today and throughout the coming week.

TULLOW, GRANGE & ARDATTIN PARISH NEWSLETTER

2nd August, 2009. Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

“I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE”
Jesus distinguishes between food that gives quick satisfaction and food that gives lasting nourishment. It is a mark of wisdom to be able to say ‘no’ to enticing but delusory attractions in order to choose things of lasting value. From your life experience what advice would you give to another about where things of lasting value are to be found?
Jesus reminds his listeners that God is the source of all good things. What difference does it make in your life when you are aware that life, the world, everything you have is gift, and you live in a spirit of
gratitude?
As Jesus came down from heaven to give life to the world, so each one of us is here to be a source of life to others. Think of people who have been a source of life to you, and give thanks for them. For whom have you also been a source of life?
